Fight Against GBV: “Over 70% Cases go unreported”

Activities marking the 2024 16 Days Activism against Gender-Based Violence have been Official launched in the North West Region of Cameroon with the startling revelation that close over 70 per cent cases of Gender-Based Violence in the Region go unreported.

During the launch, COMINSUD together with other main partners in the fight against GBV including UN Women, UNFPA, WFP, BROT (Bread for the World) Germany together with other International and Local NGOs as well as CSOs, carried out a sensitization in some major streets of Bamenda.

The North West Regional Delegate for Women Empowerment and the Family, Wirba Hassan disclosed that during the period January to November, they were 350 reported cases of GBV with more than 1,500 other cases within the Region which go unreported. This represents about 70 per cent of unreported cases.

During this 16 Days period COMINSUD will carry out other activities including Focus group discussions with women, girls, men, boys and community leaders to ascertain the level of GBV occurrences within communities while understanding local moves that have been put in place after Beijing +30. In her usual collaborative spirit, she will join other local and international partners as well as government ministries to commemorate other International and World Day events on the 1st December (World AIDS Day), the 3rd (Day of Persons with Disabilities) to cite but these.

With support from the UNFPA an SGBV-Free School campaign involving 10 secondary schools in Bamenda hosting over 1,000 students and at least 20 teachers to work with the students has been programmed.  At the end of the activity, it is expected that over 5,000 students especially teenage girls and young women in secondary are reached directly with information on topical issues related to SGBV to assist them in prevention, protection and to access services for survival and vulnerable persons.
