COMINSUD Empowers Communities for an Environmentally Sustainable Future

COMINSUD successfully carried out a transformative workshop on building a Resilient and Inclusive Friendly Environment community, empowering 30 community monitors which consisted of community leaders, members and counselors from Sisia I, II, III, and IV on March 19, 2025. Sisia quarter is one of the risk prone areas of disasters which have had recurrent records of disasters over the years like landslides, flood and other natural disasters and poor waste management systems. Sisia is located on the highlands Bamenda, North West Region of Cameroon.

COMINSUD and other partners came up with the initiative to sensitize the Sisia communities on building a Resilient and Inclusive Friendly Environment community, which focuses on critical areas such as catchment protection and environmental management. This initiative is in line with the sustainable development goal 6, 11 and 13 (clean water and sanitation, sustainability and communities, climate actions). Emphasis was laid on prioritizing collaboration through shared knowledge and united efforts, to pave the way for a sustainable environment that respects our natural resources and empowers our communities.

COMINSUD focuses on Lot 3 which is dedicated to enhancing environmental management and community accessibility. The other two lots are focused on constructing water supply systems and bridges, executed by various collaborative partners.

The workshop was based on several axes:

  • Improving Community Accessibility: Ensuring all community members can easily access essential services and resources.
  • Raising Awareness on Catchment Protection: Educating the community on the importance of preserving water catchments and halting encroachment in demarcated areas.
  • Skill Development: Equipping participants with the skills to engage in the cultivation of environmentally friendly and water-yielding plants.
  • Sustainable Water Management: Promoting local sustainable methods for managing water resources effectively.
  • Addressing Environmental Concerns: Highlighting the dangers of uncontrolled dumping in flood plains and the impact of floods on community safety and well-being.
  • Educating on Climate Change: Informing the community about climate change, its causes, and its effects on the environment and fostering Dialogue

To facilitate ongoing education, a comprehensive brochure was distributed to community leaders. This resource will aid them in disseminating vital information to their respective communities, fostering an understanding of the principles necessary for achieving a friendly and sustainable environment.
